Wedding Showcase – Katie and Rob Evans, Blackheath, London, SE3

Wedding Showcase – Katie & Rob, Blackheath, London, SE3

Ab Fab London Events were referred to this wedding by Handmade Foods, as a marquee hire company that could be recommended with confidence.

Rob and Katie wanted a very personal wedding and the site was to be a private garden.  Having grown up in her family home in Blackheath, Katie held special childhood memories of this garden and very much wanted to share this part of her past with her present and future, therefore making the garden her perfect wedding setting.  All that was needed was the transformation into a wedding venue!

We went to meet Katie where she showed us around and briefed us on her ideas for the wedding: she wanted to seat 95 guests in the main garden marquee and also accommodate a band and dancefloor.  In addition,  the wedding ceremony itself was to take place at the bottom of the garden, in another purpose built marquee.  This may well all have been possible with ease had it not been for one huge ‘fly in the ointment’ – a 40’ high tree standing in the middle of the garden!  Naturally this was going to prove challenging, but certainly not insurmountable.

The vision was that all marquee sides were to remain open to allow the garden to be an integral part of the wedding.  This idea was also versatile in that should the weather prove inclement, side walls were easy to add on the day in order to keep the weather out.

In the lead up to the big day and in fact on the day itself Katie and Rob were blessed with the best weather of the year which was such a tremendous bonus, however, in having detachable side walls, we had catered for any weather – all bases were covered thereby alleviating that particular area of stress for the bridal couple.

Were Ab Fab London Events able to see your vision for your wedding day?

Yes. The first time Pam came round to see the garden it was in early spring time although you wouldn’t have been able to tell by the wintery weather.  The garden was overgrown and I knew I wanted a marquee wrapping around the tree for the reception tent but I had not quite figured out how I wanted the ceremony tent to be.  The second time Pam came round, I thought we made much more progress as the garden had been chopped back and we figured out how we could get the ceremony marquee to seat as many people as possible in the limited area.

Did you feel confident that Ab Fab London Events would be able to deliver your vision?

Yes, we had had a few other marquee companies come around to give us quotes but Pam was by far the most excited to work with such an unusual space.  When someone else is so enthusiastic this really rubs off on you and instills confidence that they will do a good job.

Given the garden complexities, were you able to see the vision that Ab Fab London Events relayed back to you?

Yes definitely.  I had a pretty clear idea in my head of what I wanted after Pam’s second visit and I thought it was executed perfectly.  It was a really complicated structure, with many different marquees attached together to make one big one; I remember worrying that there may have to be marquee legs in the way near the dance floor but luckily this was remedied.

What advice would you give to other wedding couples wanting a similar wedding to yours or those facing site complexities?

I would advise them to have an idea in their head of what they want, talk to the professionals (Ab Fab London Events), see whether it is possible, be open to new ideas and most of all don’t panic; they know what they are doing!
